HBCU Travelers in the Community
Since its recent formation (September 2016), HBCU Travelers has had a significant impact. The organization is committed to expanding its reach by raising funds to coordinate programs on more campuses and to provide more HBCU students with international education scholarships.

November-December 2019
HBCU Travelers will be launching a new scholarship campaign from November-December 2019 to help support Spring 2020 study abroad trips for HBCU student. At least one (1) $1000 scholarship and one (1) $500 scholarship will be awarded. The number of scholarships awarded will increase as more donations are received.

HBCU Travelers awarded a $1,000 travel scholarship in June 2019 to a student in need of funds to support their Fall study abroad trip to Argentina and Italy.

HBCU Travelers launched the "Beyond the Backyard" Scholarship in effort to push students to explore outside of their comfort zones and encourage their peers to do the same. A $1,000 travel scholarship was awarded in June 2018 to a student in need of funds to support their Fall study abroad trip.

As part of the Travel Forward fundraising and awareness campaign, the HBCU Travelers Team awarded two passport scholarships to students who demonstrated a desire to overcome their fears and personal limitations by traveling abroad. Over 35 applications were received.

HBCU Travelers released its first stand-alone scholarship, providing two HBCU students with $1,000 awards to help fund international education programs they will be participating in during the Fall 2017 semester. Over 25 applications were received across a range of 14 different historically black institutions including Claflin University, Winston-Salem State University, Howard University, North Carolina A&T State University, Fisk University, Hampton University, Tennessee State University, Xavier University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, North Carolina Central University, Kentucky State University, South Carolina State University, Virginia Union University, and Bowie State University.

In efforts to get students to try new things and break out of their comfort zones, HBCU Travelers initiated the "Explore Everything" Campaign. For the start of the campaign, a social media contest was created where HBCU students were challenged with posting a picture of themselves doing something new (trying a new food, exploring a new place in the community, going to church for the first time, etc.). Finalists were chosen and the winner was selected based on the highest number of "likes" on Instagram. Winner received a free passport voucher.

HBCU Travelers launched the Campus Ambassador Program- an initiative to spread its mission to all HBCUs across the country. All ambassadors have experience participating in programs abroad and are passionate about inspiring their peers to achieve the same. Ambassadors will innovate and implement engaging programs on their own campuses, plus help promote scholarships and international travel opportunities.

The last webinar of the 2018 Travel Forward Series, "Melting the Pot," was an interactive discussion about global diversity and interacting with different cultures. The HBCU Travelers Team incorporated various personal experiences into the presentation and uncovered the beauty of embracing people who are different from oneself.

The second webinar of the Travel Forward Series was titled "Are We There Yet?" It covered a roadmap on how to apply for international experience programs, find/book flights, apply for a passport/visa, exchange currency, and ensure all of the logistics for a trip abroad.

HBCU Travelers launched the "Travel Forward" Campaign: a fundraising and campus outreach initiative. Three separate webinars were hosted by different directors on the Board. The first was titled "Beat the Odds: Go Abroad." It detailed the benefits of going abroad by demonstrating how it can successfully impact one's professional/academic goals

The program was a panel discussion promoting travel that featured undergrad students with study abroad experience, international grad students from Iran + Ghana, and the director of International Affairs.

HBCU Travelers, in partnership with The Village Mentoring Group spoke to young African-American men at Dudley High School about entrepreneurship and the benefit of traveling the world. Students asked questions about how to start their own business and how to go about studying abroad once they got to college.

HBCU Travelers hosted a virtual outreach program for the students of Gary Comer College Prep, a public charter high school in South Chicago. Founder, Kia Young, introduced the HBCU Travelers initiative, spoke to students on the benefits of international travel, and answered a number of questions about personal experiences abroad.
