Adventure Heightens Education
|
The importance of international awareness, cultural diversity, and intercultural development in an increasingly global workplace is well understood; therefore many organizations, companies, and academic institutions advocate for student participation in educational, international experiences. The Institute of International Education 2015 Open Door Report unfortunately shows that in 2013/2014 only 5.6% of the 304,467 American students who studied abroad were African American. The lack of representation of African American students inadequately depicts their presence in post-secondary education. In an increasingly globalized workforce, African American students need these experiences to remain competitive.
Studies show that many minority students don’t take advantage of the opportunities available due to social, economic, or psychological factors. Lack of a support system promoting foreign exploration and the inability to afford travel costs are just two of the reasons that cause racial disparity in abroad programs. Although historically black colleges and universities were designed to level the educational playing field, the inequality of African American participation in abroad programs limits student development. A targeted approach is needed to engage and fund HBCU students in educational, international experiences. That's where we come in!

A PEEK INTO OUR HISTORY |
On February 15, 2016, hbcutravelers.com was created in hopes of inspiring HBCU students to take on opportunities abroad. The website featured articles, highlighting the beneficial impact international opportunities have on a student’s personal and professional development. Links to organizations that offer intern, volunteer, or study abroad programs were also listed to allow students to discover those of interest to them. The use of Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook publicized students’ adventures, which led to a partnership with uVolunteer.
On April 1, 2016, hbcutravelers.com and uVolunteer opened a $2,500 scholarship for an HBCU student to volunteer in Costa Rica for three weeks. This marked the birth of new ideas and plans for hbcutravelers.com, and led to the establishment of the official non-profit organization HBCU Travelers on June 8, 2016. Since then, the organization has received multiple partnership inquiries, has participated in a number of campus outreach activities, and is currently fundraising for the HBCU Travelers Scholarship Fund. |
